Drop Is Closing as an Ecommerce Store (March 31st) — Keyboard Club Ending Too

Planck and Preonic on Drop

Drop recently shared The Next Step for Drop. As part of its integration with CORSAIR following the 2023 acquisition, Drop will no longer operate as a standalone ecommerce store as of March 31st. The Drop Keyboard Club (DKC) is ending as well. For those of us in the ortholinear and mechanical keyboard community, it's a moment to step back and appreciate what Drop has done, while also being honest about where things fell short.

What Drop Gave the Community

Drop (formerly Massdrop) has been a pillar of the keyboard community for years. They brought the OLKB Planck and Preonic to a wide audience, stocked keycap sets like MT3 and Acute, and ran group buys that made it easier to get enthusiast gear. For many of us, Drop was where we picked up our first Planck, ordered our first sculpted keycaps, or discovered ortholinear layouts. That impact is real, and it's worth saying thank you.

The Keyboard Club: High Hopes, Tough Reality

When Drop announced the Keycap Club (later the Keyboard Club) in 2021, it felt like a promising move—a yearly membership with monthly coupons for keycap purchases. At $69/year with potential savings of $20–$100 per month, it sounded like a solid deal for regular buyers.

In practice, the last two years were disappointing. The program wasn't supported the way many members hoped. Coupons were inconsistent, exclusive benefits were thin, and the value didn't match what was promised. As a DKC member, it was hard not to feel like the club had been deprioritized. So when Drop announced it was ending, it wasn't a shock—more like a formal close to something that had already faded.

What Happens Next

  • Drop's ecommerce store closes March 31st — place any final orders before then
  • DKC is no longer available for new signups. February 2026 is the last month coupons will be issued; the final coupon expires in March. Refunds will be issued for any unused membership time
  • If you're a current DKC member, you can use your remaining benefits until your coupons expire, and you won't be charged again

Looking Ahead

We're still grateful for Drop's role in popularizing the Planck, Preonic, and ortholinear keyboards. The keyboards and keycaps they've sold will keep showing up on desks for a long time. And the community—forums, Discord, Reddit, and sites like ours—will keep growing regardless of one company's changes.

If you're in the market for a Planck or Preonic, grab them on Drop before March 31st, or pick them up on Amazon. For keycaps, there are more options than ever: YMDK, FKcaps, and others offer ortholinear-friendly sets.

Thanks, Drop, for what you contributed. Here's hoping the next step works out—and that the community keeps moving forward either way.
